Personality: Clara Oswald is an impossible girl. She starts out as a mystery to the Doctor, one of the greatest mysteries he ever gets to try and solve, and often times is a complete mystery to everyone else she encounters. Initially, she may come across as an adorable and flirty token sidekick sort of character but it doesn't take long to see that there's much more to Clara that meets the eye. There is a lot of herself that Clara doesn't easily reveal to others, which makes solving her mystery even more impossible for the Doctor. She often comes across as a person who views life on a very realistic scale, someone who doesn't tolerate things that don't make sense without some form of protest, and someone who must question every little thing she finds odd. But she's able to so easily accept the fact that the Doctor is an alien, and accepts other strange things like the TARDIS with a casual shrug of her shoulders. It's easy to see that Clara uses her sharp wit as a defense mechanism, and her teasing as a way to seemingly test the person she's speaking with. She comes across as cool and collected, but then shows hints of wanting someone's approval. She'll do something because she says it needs to be done and she's the only person that can do it, but then asks if she did things correctly and seeks some sign of validation. Hidden away beneath all that sass and energy is a lot of vulnerability that she tries to keep tucked away where no one else can realize it exists.
The biggest part of Clara’s character is that she’s a control freak. She loves to be the boss, to be the one in control of every situation she finds herself in. When she’s not in control, she quickly can panic, and isn’t sure how to go about things. She can become aggressive or bossy in order to maintain control of a situation, and is seen in the series going to great lengths in order to keep control over things. If she's not in control, she's prone to doing reckless things to get that control back.
For as daring as she can often be, Clara is much more afraid of things than she lets on. She doesn't want to be seen as too weak, so she tries her best to appear the exact opposite, no matter what the circumstances. She's afraid to wear her heart on her sleeve, not wanting to be hurt, so it takes her some time to build up trust and genuine relationships with others. It's easy for her to keep conversation with people she doesn't know well, but actual trust takes time for her to work on and have full faith in. While she jumps right into a rapport with most everyone, Clara is reserved and cautious in the face of eccentric behavior. It takes her a bit of time to process it and figure out what to make of it, and this processing time is usually seen when she has her arms crossed over her chest and she's just taking everything in silently.
While she doesn't necessarily like secrets, she is perfectly content being a mystery in herself, never offering more information than is needed in order to keep a safe distance between herself and another person. She likes to think of herself as being the strong-willed boss, the one that's in charge of her own destiny. She doesn't necessarily like being bossed around and will give some sass when it's warranted, but she does listen, and is known as the only companion that actually stays put when she's told to. She only does so because of the trust she puts in the Doctor, which probably means she won't listen at all to someone that she doesn't have any faith in. When she's put in charge of a military force on another planet, she takes her job very seriously and easily assumes command, not allowing anyone to sway her orders or her opinions on what she believes to be the right thing to do. She's a natural leader, and is often seen taking the charge of situations she deems that she can make a difference in. She doesn't want to be bossy just for the sake of being in charge, but it's just a position that she does well in and her charismatic nature makes it easy to get people to listen.
Over her time with the Doctor, she’s found it particularly easy to take to lying. She’s observed the Doctor doing it, and has fine tuned the art to be able to lie to just about anyone. A large theme of her character later on is her lies and them catching up to her. She can even easily lie to the Doctor, and does so because she thinks she’s protecting him. She now has the mindset that lies can protect others, and that sometimes protecting them is better than letting them know the whole truth. It’s better to keep someone safe and ignorant of something than to inform them of the truth and hurt them.
She's a slightly quirky young woman, a feisty one that talks fast, and alternates between having a playful lilt and a sharp tone to her voice. She's often described as being clever and witty, and she is good at being able to say just the right thing to get a reaction out of someone. She can be a bit of a flirt, and is seen saying that she falls for someone sometimes twice a day. She just meshes very well with any kind of person, because she's clever enough to figure out the things to say in order to keep them guessing. She's very personable and is able to make conversation with strangers easily, and she's very good at falling into playful banter. But a lot of what she shows of her feisty personality can be a part of the mask she wears to protect herself, to keep the part of her that seeks approval and is vulnerable from being found out. Once she gets to know someone well, the quirky part of her doesn't go away, but she's prone to having more meaningful conversation and insights.
Clara often is a very practical and analytical girl. She's entirely no-nonsense in her approach to dealing with situations that require any amount of actual thought or consideration. When she's encouraged to sing in order to block out some of her fear in a soviet submarine, she initially refuses and only gives in right when she thinks everyone is about to die. She's blunt in her questioning of others when she needs to know something, and she can be seen carefully taking in any information given to her and thinking it over before forming her next question or a response. She slips in some teasing and light remarks in between her analyzing whatever is going on, but she never loses focus of keeping a clear head. She observes things that the Doctor misses, and picks up on social cues and hints that others sometimes can't. She handles her nannying and teaching jobs without letting any nonsense slip in. She has a gentle strictness about her method of command, until all of her buttons have been pressed and she's left with a sharpness to her tone that dares anyone to argue with her.
She's highly resourceful, and uses her intelligence on a practical level. She is seen being able to pick up a variety of concepts right away, without any teaching or prompting. After riding as passenger on a hover bike once, she is able to pilot it herself. She is able to be handed over a variety of weapons and is just able to know how to use them. She is good at figuring things out just by doing them, and she takes a very hands on approach to just about everything she does. While she says she doesn't particularly like history, she is always curious about learning every time and place she visits, and is a never ending source of questions. Knowledge is a form of power, and she definitely doesn't want to be left completely powerless when it comes to information.
A big theme of Clara's character is travel and adventure. Clara craves them, despite not necessarily always making these things vocal. It's a part of her personality that's been with her since childhood.Clara's mother handed down a book to her, 101 Places to See, and this is a book that Clara grew up reading and adoring. When her mother passed away in 2005, Clara made a promise to herself to see every single place in her mother's book. After graduating from university, she ended up visiting the Maitlands and was there when their mother passed away. She stayed with them as a nanny after that, and is still with them after a full year. She puts off her travels to stay with the Maitlands, and her time in the TARDIS is a sort of fulfillment of getting to travel the world. But instead of going to Paris or Rome, Clara goes to other times and planets. She's creating her own journey, and despite being afraid of some of the things she encounters along the way she is thrilled by the aspect of getting to see more and more. She describes herself as a leaf in the wind, one that she's not sure will ever stop drifting. She's a young adult that doesn't quite know their place in the world and by traveling she gets to learn more about herself as well as where she fits into the grand scheme of things. When Danny questions why Clara travels with the Doctor, she says it’s because she loves to travel and she gets to see wonders. Clara seems almost addicted to the adventure and seeing things she never has before. It’s become a part of her lifestyle, and she greatly enjoys the adventure.
Clara's bravery is something that is often overlooked, due to the fact she can be quite wide eyed and fearful in dangerous situations. But despite how afraid she might be of something, or how reserved she might come across in dangerous situations, Clara is very brave. She is able to face her fears and conquer them. She saves the Doctor on numerous occasions, and she is able to gather enough courage to step into the Doctor's timeline and save both him and the entire universe. She is seen in her first episodes more or less reacting to the events that unfold around her, reserved and unsure of what in the world is going on. As things progress and she sees and experiences more, she is more capable of leaping head first into any kind of situation. She still has her moments of wide eyed fear, but she is able to react and survive despite it. She willingly sacrifices her own safety over and over again to save others, which balances out the times she gets in over her head and needs to be saved.
Loyalty is one of Clara's greatest attributes. She refuses to leave the people she cares about behind, or watch them suffer while she can do something about it. She was very close to both of her parents, and after her mother's passing, she slips the leaf that resulted in her parents' relationship into the book her mother gave her. It's her greatest possession, along with her mother's ring. She's very loyal to the idea that the leaf she possesses is the greatest leaf in human history, and clings hold of the idea of how happy her parents were together and how happy they would have been if her mother was still alive. However, her loyalty to the Doctor and to saving a little girl she feels responsible for causes her to put aside her attachment to the items and selflessly give them up in order to save the day. People are always going to be greater than things to Clara, and once she forms even a slight attachment to someone she considers them worth protecting and sticking around for. Despite the fact that the Maitland children probably don't need her all that often, Clara sticks around for them and their father. She understands what it's like to lose a mother, and she doesn't want Angie and Artie to go without. She often gets into slight tiffs with Angie, who insists that Clara's not her mother, and Clara always is quick to remind the teenage girl that she's not trying to.
Clara is a very motherly person that is instinctively drawn toward helping and protecting children. She's empathic in general, but particularly so with children. She is a nanny for two children that probably are a bit too old to have her around, but she refuses to leave them after the death of their mother. When brought to the planet Akhaten, she helps guide and protect a little girl named Merry. One of her echoes, a victorian governess, takes great care of two children and dies trying to protect both them and the Doctor. She can come across as a bit of a Mary Poppins sort of person when interacting with children. Her motherly instincts make her compassionate toward others, even through her analytical nature. When faced against an alien warrior that she's afraid will cause a nuclear meltdown that might destroy the world, Clara is able to sympathize with his situation and talk reason into him. She wants to take care of others and help them out as much as possible, and make sure that everyone stays as safe as possible.
Clara is also fiercely independent. She exercises great amounts of free will in every episode she's seen in, and every single thing that happens to her in the series is because of choices she's made for herself. When asked by the Doctor to travel with him, she refuses to answer him right away and instead makes him come back the next day to get his answer. And when she agrees to go with him, she doesn't just drop her regular life and move right into the TARDIS and never look back. She only travels with him once or twice a week, and from conversations heard in the episode Nightmare in Silver, it appears to be she only travels with him on Wednesdays. Despite loving to travel and enjoying her time with him, she refuses to just give up everything else to run off and ignore her responsibilities. When the Doctor regenerates and she takes to traveling with him, she does so on her own terms still. He may show up at her work and her flat, but it’s up to her whether or not she travels with him. She keeps her life with the Doctor very separate from her home life back on Earth, and gets furious when the two lives crash together and intersect into something she doesn’t fully have control over.
When she feels that the Doctor has her around because she reminds him of someone, she's quick to come to her own defense and say that she won't travel with him if he constantly thinks of her as being that other person. She just won't compete with ghosts. She's always first to speak up for her own rights and her own well being, even up against people that she enjoys being around. She's sure to keep the Doctor on his toes, and seems to enjoy flirting with him and teasing, saying things that she knows will wind him up. When he declares in passing that she's the boss, she takes hold of it and runs with it. She doesn't let anyone or anything hold her back from chasing after what she wants, and if anyone tries she's got no problem telling them off or punching them. She's a tiny little thing, but she's a spitfire.
Abilities/Skills: She doesn't have any special powers or abilities. She's got some diplomatic skills under her belt thanks to all her adventures, and is probably better than average at completing physical tasks due to having to run and fight so often.

SAMPLES
Network Sample: [She's been here for a few hours now, and really isn't sure what to make of anything. Something about all of this feels eerily familiar, but she can't really put her finger as to why that is while she still feels out of sorts. She's done the exploring thing, bumped into a few people here and there, and now feels as good of a time as any to do the talking over the communicator to people. When she pops up on screen, she's awkwardly smiling, and looks off to the left and to the right before speaking. Oh, this just feels weird.]
Is it on? Hello? [She purses her lips together, and eventually decides that yes it is, and gives a firm nod of her head. Her smile becomes warmer at that point, and she flips a hand up in a wave.]
This is all real, isn't it? Really, properly real. [Some of the things that have happened recently outside of this place, she's a bit unsure about all of that.] Right then, I'll take another spaceship over being dead any day. But -
[A pause, and then she's left frowning.]
I'm looking for someone that’s managed to misplace himself. He answers to Doctor. Not a doctor. The Doctor. Dunno why he insists on being particular about that, but now he's got me doing it too. [Which is just great, really.]
He's easy to pick out of a crowd, what with the crazy hair, gangly limbs, and the inability to stay out of trouble. If you stumble across him, be sure to let him know his carer is looking for him. I don't think Avagi can handle him left unattended for too long.
